The Casino Biohub project is a proposed environmental infrastructure project in Casino, New South Wales. It aims to improve how organic wastewater is treated at the Casino Food Company’s existing livestock processing facility. The Biohub will treat wastewater using an innovative method known as anaerobic digestion to break down liquid waste. This process will capture greenhouse gases and then safely destroy them via flaring to reduce emissions. The facility will also look to store biogas for a biogas-to-electricity generation. LRC Geotechnical were commissioned to undertake detailed geotechnical investigation and design of the 50ML covered anaerobic lagoon structure in the San Marla Farm in Casino. The geotechnical scope was aimed to assess the stability of the lagoon structure as well as provide recommendations for cut and fill earthworks, methods of excavation through the underlying sandstone substrate as well as requirements for dam lining. The geotechnical services provided for the project include: Detailed investigation includes deep boreholes to ascertain necessary subsurface conditions and groundwaters. Assessment of the permeability of in-situ soils and their suitability for use as lagoon lining materials. Evaluation of site-won materials for suitability in constructing lagoon embankments. Recommendations regarding the use of HDPE lining for lagoon walls. Assessment of soil and rock excavation to design depths, including general guidance on suitable excavation equipment. Assessment of dam wall stability under different operation conditions and external loadings. Recommendations for stable lagoon wall design and construction, including earthwork material selection, foundation preparation, cut/fill procedures, and erosion control measures. Identification of geotechnical constraints, project limitations, and general site recommendations.
